While aluminum has been around as a frame material for over 30 years, it hasnt reached its zenith yet. Aluminum keeps getting better and better. You can take advantage of these gains while saving a bundle by scoring the BMC Teammachine ALR01 105 bike. It has a ride remarkably similar to the carbon-fiber Teammachine SLR01 while providing a complete bike that you can score for well less than half of the SLR01 frameset.
While the frameset is built for racing, the geometry has been tweaked so your back doesnt get wrenched by an aggressive racing position. Theres a little more stack and a little less reach on the ALR01 than youll find on the SLRs. Taller head tube, shorter top tube. And the geometry is moved a bit to keep the ride quality the same. It still comes in five sizes that can accommodate just about everyone.
Aluminum is a great, relatively inexpensive material that smart people keep on finding new and better ways to manipulate. The more they can work it, the more precise the resulting ride properties can get. BMC starts with their successful Teammachine SLR frames, the knowhow they gained in building them, and applies many of the same shaping ideas to aluminum. And they were able to work their Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC) into the frame. Hydroforming triple-butted tubes minimizes weight while being able to really dial in both stiffness and comfort. Cadel Evans, BMCs recently-retired Tour de France winner, is riding this ALR01 as his main bike, and he finds it as stiff and comfortable as the Teammachine SLR01 he raced until recently. Weight is also pretty good. The 54cm frame size, painted, comes in at 1295g.
The group of choice is Shimanos 105 5800 mechanical groupset. It bears all the design ideas that Shimano introduced with their Dura-Ace 9000 group, but they engineers the components with an eye firmly trained on reducing costs. The finish isnt as rich and the weight isnt as low, but the stuff works great and will keep on working great for a long, long time. When you squeeze the brake lever and initiate a shift, youll be impressed with how little friction and how fast the action is. Stock gearing is the mountain-ready 50/34 with an 11-32 eleven-speed cassette.
Keeping in mind that price is a driver for this bike, BMC kept things simple. The carbon fork comes over from the SLR03, and has a 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 tapered steerer. The cable runs are external. The bottom bracket is English-threaded. Bars, stem, seatpost are all aluminum and from BMC.
Wheels are Shimanos reliable WH-RS010s. These have a spoke count low enough to race, but are laced to a rim durable for daily abuse. Theyre covered in Continental Ultra Sport 2 SL 23mm tires, which has a brief that matches the wheels. If youre racing, or looking to eke out more performance, upgrade the tires and the wheels with a portion of the huge savings that came with the bike.
The BMC Teammachine ALR01 105 Bike is a sneaky performer. It looks like a pricey carbon-fiber wonder, it rides like one: you dont have to brag about the aluminum frame and the incredible savings.

If you asked Jack Wilson 60 years ago what he wanted to do when he grew up, he without a doubt would have said, "own a bicycle shop". Although not all childhood dreams come true, fortunately Jack's did. It took a move from Kentucky to Illinois and the Patience and support of his amazing wife Mary for this dream to come to fruition.
Because of his love for bikes, Jack saved $10,000 then road off with a dream in 1969. He jammed 13 bikes into his 1967 four-door Chevy, hauled them from Champaign and carefully displayed them across the floor of an old Main Street restaurant in Mackinaw that he'd converted into his first bicycle shop. Just a few weeks later- and just three days before his appointment to buy insurance for his new venture- that dream turned to ashes. An overnight fire wiped out everything leaving Jack and Mary with a costly and emotional decision.
Rebuild or Give up ..
Over 45 years and 4 bicycle shop relocations later Jack is still at it and bigger than ever!
The bicycle shop has transformed from Main Street in the small town of Mackinaw to Main Street in Downtown Bloomington boasting the largest selection of bicycles and accessories in the area with over 8000 sq ft to house it.
His contagious passion for bicycles has trickled down to his son Michael who works side by side with Jack. With a combined experience of 84 years working on and selling bicycles, Jack and Michael are the go to guys for bicycle sales and service.
When you visit Wilson Cycle you feel like a part of the family, because it has been owned and operated by the Wilson family since 1969. Jack and Mary raised 4 kids (Leah, Kevin, Ashley, and Michael) and 5 Grandkids (Shevi, Melinda, Levi, Mattea, and Montana) at Wilson Cycle.
